AWS Expands in Greece and Cyprus

The opening of the first Amazon Web Services (AWS) office in Greece, in Athens, follows the launch of an Amazon CloudFront location in Athens and a Memorandum of Understanding signed with Greece’s Ministry of Digital Governance in 2020 to build a modern, digital Greece powered by cloud computing.

This is a significant development — the information initially suggested the company did not intend to proceed with this move. It took ten months and 340 people to implement the decision, one of the fastest approvals the company has given. This AWS investment will also lead to the creation of new jobs, alongside free training programs for the unemployed.

As mentioned in AWS’s announcement, the new Greek office is part of AWS’s ongoing investment in Greece, as the company continues to expand its team supporting the growing number of customers and partners in the region. The office will support organizations of all sizes, including startups, businesses, and public sector organizations, as they make the transition to the AWS Cloud.

The Greek AWS Partner Network (APN) welcomed the opening of the AWS office in Greece. APN includes tens of thousands of Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) and systems integrators around the world. These partners create innovative solutions and services in an AWS environment, and the APN network supports them across business, technical, marketing, and go-to-market strategy. Systems integration companies (APN SIs) such as Accenture, Cloud Nomads, Deloitte, and PwC work with clients in the private and public sectors in Greece — including municipalities, academic institutions, public broadcasters, public infrastructure, and public energy and utility companies — supporting the development of critical applications and the automation and management of their customers’ cloud environments.

Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) in Greece that use AWS services to provide software to customers worldwide include Blendo, Interxion, Lenses.io, and Upgrade. Customers in Greece can easily search, try, develop, and purchase AWS software on the AWS Marketplace.

AWS provides secure computing power, data storage, networking, and databases, as well as advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, as on-demand, pay-as-you-go services. Some of the most successful startups internationally, such as Airbnb and Netflix, large companies such as BMW, Formula 1, and Twitter, and public bodies such as the European Space Agency, the European Commission, the UK Department of Justice, and NASA, use AWS services to innovate, stay flexible, and keep their information systems’ operating costs low.
